Downtown Reno: casinos, events, and the Riverwalk
Downtown Reno is where most major casino-hotels are located — properties like Caesars Rewards and Eldorado sit within walking distance of each other and the Truckee River. The National Bowling Stadium and Reno Events Center anchor the area for large gatherings. The Riverwalk District along the Truckee River has restaurants, galleries, and a popular whitewater park. This is the most walkable area and the best choice if you want a casino-hotel package or plan to attend events at the convention center.
Midtown Reno: local dining and breweries
Midtown runs along South Virginia Street south of Downtown and is Reno's most independently-owned commercial corridor. Craft breweries, coffee shops, vintage stores, art galleries, and chef-driven restaurants are clustered here. Accommodations in Midtown are mostly boutique hotels, motels, and short-term rentals — fewer casino-hotels. This area is ideal if local food and bar culture matters more to you than casino amenities. It is a 10–15 minute walk or short rideshare from Downtown.
South Reno: family-friendly with mountain access
South Reno is more suburban, with big-box retail, chain hotels, and access to hiking trails on the Mount Rose Corridor (US-395 South). It is closest to the Mount Rose Highway (NV-431) that leads to North Lake Tahoe — the drive to Tahoe from South Reno can be 10–15 minutes shorter than from Downtown. Good for families or those who want quieter surroundings with easy freeway access.
North Valleys (Stead/Lemmon Valley)
North of Downtown, the North Valleys area is primarily residential and industrial. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport and the National Automobile Museum are within or near this broader zone. Fewer tourist accommodations exist here; it is primarily relevant for travelers arriving via the airport who want nearby lodging before heading south or west.
Practical tips
All Reno districts are within 20–30 minutes of each other by car. Parking is generally free or inexpensive at casino-hotels and most South Reno properties. The RTC Washoe bus network connects major corridors (rtcwashoe.com) but the city is car-forward — most visitors drive or use rideshare.
